As a business owner, it is crucial to master the art of client relationships. The way you initially establish these relationships will determine how you manage them in the future. This aspect is essential, as it requires you, as the business owner, to possess interpersonal skills, effective communication, active listening, and an understanding of the Golden Rule—treating clients as you would like to be treated. Below are some key suggestions to help you build trust with your clients while also delivering value to them.

Building Trust With Your Customers and Deliver Value to Your Customers:

  • Make sure you have performed research on the needs of the client.

During client needs assessment research, it is essential to compile a comprehensive list of their requirements, prioritize them by significance, and develop corresponding solutions for each need. Ensure you attend meetings with clients equipped with written documentation or a presentation that outlines the issues and proposed solutions they are seeking your expertise to address.

  • Ask your client questions to make sure everyone is on the same page.

Many business owners encounter challenges when team members are not aligned. These owners may struggle with addressing such situations effectively. It is crucial to take detailed notes during client meetings. If there is any uncertainty about the client's message, ask follow-up questions for clarity. Ensure that, before concluding the meeting, all parties have a comprehensive understanding of the issues and their solutions.

  • Listen more and talk less so that you can take notes on the needs of your clients.

As business owners, we often have a strong desire to speak passionately about our ventures. However, it is crucial to focus on listening more and speaking less to effectively address the needs of our clients. By prioritizing listening, you can take comprehensive notes during meetings. Once you return to your office to develop solutions, you will be able to discern which approaches are viable and which are not. It is essential for you, as the business owner, to ensure that all your research and proposed solutions are actionable and beneficial for your clients.

  • Be truthful on what you can and cannot deliver to the client. As a business owner, it is essential to be honest about your areas of expertise. Avoid claiming the ability to perform tasks that you cannot execute. Clients will appreciate your honesty. Recognizing that time is valuable, it is important not to waste your clients' time in this regard.

  • Have a list of companies you can refer to your clients on the areas that you are not an expert such as CPA's, Attorney's, Virtual Assistant and etc.

I strongly suggest that every business owner maintain a list of companies their clients can outsource to. These are fields outside your expertise, and having this list will be valuable for your clients.
